On the first week of Traditional class, we are tasked to draw line and line weight, developing a still life with the use of line only. I started my piece by using the camera grid to determine the composition and item locations before laying them up on thumbnails.
The setup
Process
Drawing thumbnails and grids on the page to get the correct composition
lightly with a 2B pencil, sketching out the basic shapes, I have to extend the drawing area because there wasn't enough space to draw the flowers. This happens a lot in my drawing and I have learned to scale things down and move objects in my drawings.
refining the shape of the objects and vegetables
refining more of the objects and starting roughly block out the flowers, I did count how many there are to get accurate numbers of flowers. The leaves are left out to be drawn as organic clutters
I start adding the weight onto the object that sits at the front
adding detail to the objects
as I draw I got a critique and advice to use lines to block out where the light hits the object. It is very stylized and new to me. It was very interesting and fun, I will definitely use this technique to improve my work in the future.
with the technique I just learn, I added more texture to the objects and added more and more weights
at this point I got another piece of advice not to add too much weight to the object that sits behind the broccoli as it would look like it merged to each other instead. I erased the line weight between to objects to separate them and it did look better!
Final Piece ( before edit )
This is such a good skill brushing after the summer after not holding pencils for so long, I am very proud that I still have the skills to make them. I am also very glad of the new techniques I got during class and advice on my drawing to improve my lighting, weight and texture on this piece.
