Cube World: Final Sketch and Colour Palettes

I make the final sketch of the island before I start with the colour scheme. I decided to add more to the island by making another land and increasing the size of the island so I can add more details.

Colour Palettes

Set of colour palettes

I wanted to keep the colour of the piece to be dreamy, cute and give off a cool tone to match the sea and the sky theme. I did experiment with gradient maps and overlay layer mode to find the colour I wants. My favourite ones would be my first and the last colour set. However, I still go with my first choice and try more overlay mode on them to experiment with more tones. I really like all of them and how each colour gives off its own effect.

House/Shop Project : Decorative assets 2 + Final model

Another part of the shop that I enjoyed painting. It was a struggle at first to figure out the Alpha on 3ds Max but in the end, I managed in the end.

Painting Process

Base colour and adding details
Adding more shading and blurred layer under alpha assets

Make Alpha on foliage

I figure out that I can mix and make Alpha with only the foliage and leave the platform as its own texture. This is to still be within the budget given.

Adding to the shop

moving the foliage to make them look more 3d/less flat

copy-pasted the front to the back of the shop

adding the platform texture base colour

adding grasses and flowers with alphas

close up of the flowers

Final Model

Shop Tris: 5,362
Props Tris: 4,943
Overall Tris: 10,305

Front of the shop, compared to the starter shop on the first week

Back of the shop, compared to the starter shop on the first week

This task helps me piece out each part of the course altogether and create my first actual project and I am very happy with the end result. Even it is looking janky and weird, as my first shop design and not very experienced with the programs. I am very proud of myself and I will continue to improve!

Value Range and Shading

Value Range and Shading is the last assignment this term that required me to understand the sense of light and texture, a feeling of depth, or three-dimensionality of the object in front of me. I am quite fond of the crosshatching technique and is familiar with it, I am not good with it but the sense of familiarity makes me feel quite confident with this work.

Thumbnail Sketch and blocking
Tool used: 2B pencil and putty eraser

I first start off by making a small thumbnail on top of the page and drawing a grid on both canvas and sketch to get the right proportion. Blocking out with the skill I learn from Ellipses and Symmetry task, I fill in the box with the objects.

Final Piece

Tool used: 2B - 6B pencil and putty eraser on A3

After the cleanups and finishing this work. This might be the first work I did so far that I can proudly say that I love it and am happy with it. My crosshatching technique could be improved and more detailed and try to keep the page from smudging with my wrist. Overall, I am really proud of myself as the last work before term break.

House/Shop Project : Trim sheets

The trim sheet took me a while to fit all the items in the layout and think of what to add to the sheet as I multitask and make the sheet while making the model itself. I started by making the sheet references from the example sheet from Blackboard.
Trim sheet layout and base colour

Wood beam process

For wood beams, I started making basic wood beam shapes then adding shadings in greyscale. I then duplicate and stack them so I can have both pink wood and brown wood beams by using gradient maps.

Door process

The door was made with the same technique, base colour -> Greyscale -> gradient map with the addition of golden nails on the door.

Windows and signs process

The windows are quite fun to make. I try to make the inside of the shop but blur them later for the glasses pane as it looks weird on the actual shop. It took me a few tries to get the right design of the signs.
Outlines and colour inside of the shop

Adding blur, shadow, and lighting

Painting signs with gradient maps

Stone process

The stones are quite easy to do by using references and using a similar technique to the stone wall tiling.

Final Piece

When the trim sheet was finally finished I was so relieved because it meant I could finally work on the foliage. I am very happy with the colour pallet I chose for this project, it was hard at first to select only one.

Cube World: Sketch and Silhouette

Silhouette

Silhouette and shape language can be used to express the general vibe of what I wanted from my piece. In this case, I wanted most of my shapes to be round and safe that will go along with the cute aesthetic of the concept and characters.

Silhouette for buildings/props

I have three main assets in my world in total; The house, the ship, and the castle.
All of these tend to have sharp triangle centred shapes which can give off a dangerous feeling rather than cute so I round all the sharp corners up in the hope it will make the shape feels safer.

Shell house is my favourite because it has the most references and ideas on how to work with them, while the ship and castle were added later and are less detailed.

Island planning

After planning out the props that would be on the island is the island itself. My initial concept of the island is to make them out of animals such as whales, turtles, crabs and jellyfish.
First island skecthes

Then it changed later on to two other concepts
  • A jellyfish island with kelp tentacles
  • Island with the underside as an old civilization//ruins
Island planing

These two ideas are then dismissed after the feedback. The tentacles can look messy and it doesn’t have an actual usage while the ruins underwater may be too hard to fit in a small space as its potential should make it very detailed. These can be distracting from the actual piece.

Prefinal sketch

After a long debate, I settled with the classic floating island and included the whale as a character with the boy instead of making it a part of the island. The main structures of the island will be the shell house, castle and sank ship as planned in the silhouette.

I am very proud of this idea despite feeling that it is a bit uncreative and I could do better, but for the moment I will work with this and do my best during the rendering process. If I could improve on my world I would like for the sketch to be cleaner with continueous lines.

House/Shop Project : Decorative assets 1

This asset is the most important part of my build as my concepts are flowers and bread. A bakery with top floor as a flower shop. I did a small mood board and style research for my props with the goal is to make cute low poly bread and use alphas for foliage.

Process on the models

Building base for each baked goods
Placing on the table and resize
Shelves placement
Adjustment the table tops
Base Colour test

Painting Process

Base colours and masking

adding details to the baked goods

After the feedback of the berries looking too saturated, I change the colour a little and desaturated it down.

adding more details, highlights and changing background colour ready to put in as a texture

Final Piece

I have a lot of feedback for this task and I am beyond happy with it after finishing them! There are a few spots I wish I could change such as the baguette in the basket. I messed up the UV maps and have no idea how the texture should looks like when painting in unwarp so I copy-pasted the other side to it But overall, very enjoy the work. I would definitely do it again.
