Lighting, Colour and Mood

After 4 which is to draw the thumbnail for this week's task. Week 5 I spent a lot of time rendering and painting this painting. However, instead of acrylic paint mentioned in last week's blog. With advice from tutors, acrylic finish will not be matt and may effect the photo taken during the process, so I bought a brand new Gouache kit.
This week's task will be the first time I use gouache as my medium.

Process

Starting from the sketch I did last week

I start on the lightest part of the painting which are the white clothes and later paints the small details on the inside of the wall
I start the wall with the base colour first and paint the part near it. At first, I was following the watercolour rule to paint the lightest part first. Because I soon later know gouache can be layered, I wasn't as scared and painted where ever I wanted

I painted all the based colours of each object in the scene and did the clothes folds as I was hesitant to paint in bricks. I fell ill and have to take a break from it for a few days.

It was a nice break since I can ask for advice from my tutor about my mood and tone so far. I fixed the shadow and contrast of the painting and start on the bricks

After finishing the bricks I added the building in the background to show that the scene is outside. More reflected light on the bricks and walls are added and I did a final touch up.

Final Piece

A3 size sketchbook, gouache

Since this piece is the first time I use gouache, I was informed that I was using it too thick. In my future painting, I will try to use less of them and mix more as I was also using the colour straight from the tube, which is why the paint is so saturated. But overall, I am very happy with the result.
